Overview

The hydropower plant originally used Tyrolean intake structures that got clogged and damaged during flooding season. The wide bar spacing allowed rocks, wood and debris to lodge between the bars, causing corrosion, structural bending, and frequent shutdowns.

ADENCO replaced the Tyrolean intake structures with custom Coanda screens, redesigning the weir for the steeper Coanda geometry (a screen slope of about 50 degrees, compared with 17 degrees on the original Tyrolean bar screen) with new steel support structures, and delivering the full design of the intake structure in 8 weeks. The screens were built in 304 stainless steel and installed in 2019.

Before the retrofit, every flood meant opening the flushing gate and shutting the turbine down until the flood water had passed. Since the conversion the intake has kept the hydropower plant generating at full output through the same flood seasons, and the screen continues to operate without disruption.

Note on the images: two of the photographs in the gallery below were taken with the river in flood, flowing brown with sediment over the screen face. That is exactly the condition that used to force shutdowns at this site. The original bar screen, clogged with leaves, branches and plastic waste, is shown in the before-and-after comparison above.

BEFOREAFTER
< >
Before: the original Tyrolean bar screen, clogged with leaves, branches and plastic waste, which is what forced the flood-season shutdowns. After: the same intake after the retrofit, with debris carried across the screen surface instead of held against it.
Site footage of the retrofitted intake in operation. Flow passes across the screen face and through the slots, moved by gravity alone.
