Overview

The first use of Coanda screens for drinking water in the Trabzon region. ADENCO worked with TISKI, the water and sewerage administration of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, to modernise 64 drinking water intake structures serving 64 separate settlements, retrofitting each one with a Coanda screen. Every one of the 64 screens serves the same purpose: supplying drinking water to the settlement fed by that intake.

The screens themselves use no electricity and have no moving parts: raw water flows in a thin sheet across the wedge wire surface while leaves, pine needles, gravel and sand are carried over the screen face instead of clogging it. Stage one covered 22 intake structures; stage two added the remaining 42.

ADENCO held finished screens in stock for the project and dispatched them one intake site at a time, whenever TISKI requested them. TISKI never had to wait for manufacturing during the project.

The project took place in 2019 and 2020. News reports at the time (a statement by the TISKI General Directorate of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, reported by Ihlas News Agency on 22 January 2019) described the two stages. The stated goals were cleaner water at the intake, significantly reduced turbidity, keeping unwanted material out of the treatment plants, and fewer supply interruptions. Mayor Dr. Orhan Fevzi Gümrükçüoğlu described the work as a major change in the city’s drinking water supply.

The intakes supply water continuously through the year, winter included, and a number of them are located at rocky, hard-to-access mountain sites where a conventional intake structure is difficult to build and harder still to maintain.

Before and after, intake by intake
Çarşıbaşı, Yavuz intake before the retrofit: a rusted flat bar grate on the weir crest, holding leaves and debris, with murky water pooled behind the weirBEFORE
The same intake after the retrofit, water flowing in a thin sheet over a Coanda screen built into the rebuilt concrete weir on a misty forest streamAFTER
Çarşıbaşı, Yavuz III, 20 l/s. Before: the water pooled behind the weir and dropped onto a flat bar grate that held leaves and debris on its surface. After: the rebuilt intake with the Coanda screen built into the downstream side of the weir.
Çaykara, Uzungöl intake before the retrofit: a loose rock channel with a black supply pipe laid on the river bedBEFORE
The same small river after the retrofit, water flowing in a thin sheet over an ADENCO Coanda screen built into a new concrete weirAFTER
Çaykara, Uzungöl, 30 l/s. Before: the supply pipe lay in an open rock channel with no structure around it. After: a small concrete weir with the Coanda screen on its downstream side and the river flowing over it.
Tonya, Sayraç intake before the retrofit: a rough masonry wall holding back green, stagnant water pooled behind itBEFORE
The same site after the retrofit, with a new concrete weir and Coanda screen across the small riverAFTER
Tonya, Sayraç, 30 l/s. Before: a masonry wall holding back a calm pool of water. After: a new concrete weir across the small river with the Coanda screen built into it.
Tonya, Karaağaçlı intake before the retrofit: a rusted steel bar screen over an intake chamber of dark, silted waterBEFORE
The same site after the retrofit, a Coanda screen mounted on the weir between the concrete wallsAFTER
Tonya, Karaağaçlı, 30 l/s. Before: a rusted steel bar screen over an intake chamber of dark, silted water. After: the Coanda screen mounted on the weir between the existing concrete walls.
Akçaabat, Mazrallı intake before the retrofit: an open forest stream with no intake structure, the supply pipe hidden under fallen leavesBEFORE
The same forest stream after the retrofit, a compact concrete intake with a Coanda screen built into its frontAFTER
Akçaabat, Çamlıca, Mazrallı, 20 l/s. Before: an open forest stream with no intake structure. After: a compact concrete block with the Coanda screen built into its front, a size typical of the smaller sites in the project.
Site footage from one of the TISKI intakes. The clip begins with the outlet valve closed: the screen is taking in water from the river, but the screened water has nowhere to go, so it rises in the intake chamber and spills out under the screen. When the site technician opens the valve the spill stops, and all the water the screen takes in flows out through the supply pipe. The water is moved by gravity alone.
